Some of our favourite honey recipes

We’re obviously pretty obsessed with enjoying honey here at Honeybee Heroes—in tea, on bread, in fancy date night dishes, or (don’t judge!) piled high on a spoon and dipped right into the peanut butter jar. Unlike artificially sweetened, blended, heated, or filtered honey—typically the honey found in plastic bottles at the shop—raw honey is a naturally vitamin-rich, antioxidant, and antimicrobial wellness product, so enjoying it isn’t just guilt free; it’s a great supplement to a well-balanced diet.

Today, our team here at Honeybee Heroes wanted to share some of our favourite honey-forward recipes with you, so that we can all savour the flavour—and health benefits—raw honey has to offer.

If you whip up one of these recipes, don’t forget to snap a picture and tag us on Instagram @honeybeeheroes—or share your own recipes with us! We love to see what people are making with their Honeybee Heroes honey. And with every spoonful you enjoy, don’t forget to send a quiet thanks to the hardworking honeybees who helped produce it!

Here are our favourite ways to use honey in the kitchen:

Honey Citrus Smoothie

Start out your day with this perfect wake-me-up Honey Citrus Smoothie from Jaime Moag, our guru for all things marketing, our hive adoption facilitator, and the woman behind our socials at Honeybee Heroes.

Toss the following into a blender:

  • A handful of fresh or frozen mango (cubed)

  • 250 grams of plain yoghurt

  • ½ an orange, freshly squeezed (Pro tip: you can substitute with pre-bought OJ)

  • 1-2 tablespoons of Honeybee Heroes honey

  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds

  • A dash of cinnamon

  • A pinch of fresh orange zest

Blend, pour, sip, enjoy!

Chocolate Avocado Mousse

Hosting a dinner party? You’ll need that blender again for this crowd-pleasing pudding from SarahBelle Selig, our writer here at HBH. This Chocolate Avocado Mousse is an easy pre-make dessert that you can spoon into serving bowls and pop in the fridge up to three hours before eating—which means a clean kitchen by the time guests arrive! The avocado makes it creamy, and doesn’t overwhelm the chocolate flavour.

Here’s what you’ll need, per person attending:

  • 1 ripe, small to medium avocado

  • 50-100 grams raw cacao powder, to taste

  • 2 to 3 tablespoons of Honeybee Heroes honey, to taste

  • 1 cup of full cream milk. You can easily switch this for coconut milk or almond milk; it may just need a bit more honey and cacao to balance it out.

Add all of the first three ingredients plus half of the milk to the blender and blend. Add the rest of the milk slowly and continue blending, until it reaches your desired consistency. For a little extra flair, just before serving, whip up some fresh whipped cream to top it off and pop on a few berries and mint sprigs!

Honey Curry Banana Salad

Lastly, here’s a recipe for a Honey Curry Banana Salad from Reuben Burls, Honeybee Heroes’ Operations Manager, courtesy of his Afrikaans Ouma!

Ouma’s curried banana salad:

  • 6 to 8 bananas (sliced)

  • ¼ cup raisins

  • 2 tablespoons of Honeybee Heroes honey

  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise

  • 1 tablespoon vinegar

  • ½ teaspoon borrie/turmeric powder

  • ½ teaspoon curry powder

Whisk the spices, honey, mayonnaise, and vinegar together until well mixed, then carefully fold in the banana slices and raisins. Serve chilled!

Ready to stock up on your honey supply? We’re currently running a Winter Fynbos honey sale, where you’ll get 3kg (6 bottles) of our raw Honeybee Heroes honey for just R550!
